In-the-Drawer Hearing Aids

You may know somebody, possibly even yourself, who keeps their hearing aids in a drawer rather than in their ears. There are many reasons why this happens ranging from a lack of realistic expectations to  incorrect device selection to poor programming, which results in dissatisfaction, poor performance in noisy environments and squealing of the hearing aids. However, with advancements in technology and increased knowledge of the hearing mechanism, there is no reason why this should happen anymore! In order to prevent this, it is important to know that not every hearing aid is made the same and not every style of hearing aid will work! ..And even more importantly, not every person programming your devices or office you visit has the same approach to hearing healthcare. Each patient is unique and an individual approach to treatment should be taken to ensure a stellar outcome.

There are many factors that determine success. First, a consultation is recommended with a Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) to determine one’s listening requirements, followed by a thorough audiological evaluation to determine degree and type of hearing loss and most importantly one’s word understanding capability in both quiet and background noise. A course of treatment will then be discussed with your Audiologist to see which hearing aid style and technology level will best aid you in your journey towards better hearing. In conclusion, three major components are required to be able to hear your best and these are: a high quality device, a knowledgeable hearing healthcare professional, and ….YOU!

If you or somebody you know has hearing aids that they are not utilizing and keep in the drawer, make an appointment at Tustin Hearing Center and we will be more than happy to provide you with a complimentary consultation to evaluate your hearing status and assess your current devices!
