Do you have an old set of hearing aids that you don’t use anymore? Why not donate them? Every year thousands of hearing aids are donated from hearing professionals and other individuals looking to help those who can’t afford hearing aids. Those hearing aids open up the world of sound to people in need. Many of the hearing aids used on international missions come from donation programs, giving the gift of better hearing to those in need, and the need is great!
WHY RECYCLE HEARING AIDS?
The World Health Organization estimates that 278 million people worldwide have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears. Yet, current annual production of hearing aids is estimated to meet less than 10% of global need. Those in poverty are especially affected because they are unable to afford the preventative care necessary to avoid hearing loss or hearing aids to improve their hearing.
Hearing impairment and deafness are serious disabilities that can impose heavy social and economic burdens on individuals, families, communities and countries. Children with hearing impairment often experience delayed development of speech and language skills, which may result in slow learning and difficulty in school. Adults who are hard of hearing often experience difficulty in obtaining and keeping employment. Both children and adults may suffer from social isolation as a result of hearing impairment. Through the generosity of organizations and institutions throughout the nation, your donated hearing aids will help others enjoy the sounds many of us take for granted.
