There is a long list of things that influence the understanding of speech. Our brains depend upon the ears to receive the speech input and hearing loss requires amplification devices to deliver the signal in the clearest way possible. A noisy environment will complicate the integrity of the speech signal making it more difficult to sort through the key sounds. For some ears, just hearing louder does not do the trick. It requires advanced hearing aid circuitry to assist with noise management, speech enhancement, and carefully adjusted frequency management to adequately deliver the consonant sounds you need to hear. Hearing loss is not just a loss of volume but often has distortion complicating the message. It can often sound like a foreign language to the hearing impaired. We often overlook the importance of the “speaker” in delivering the clearest speech signal. It is no surprise to those with hearing loss that “Who ate the last piece of cake?” Can sound like “hoatethlasspeesacake?” Research has shown that speakers can improve the signal by as much as 20% by using “Clear Speech”.
Clear Speech is defined as:
- Accurate and fully formed sounds
- Naturally slower and slightly louder
- Lively with a full range of voice intonation where key words are stressed
- Characterized by pauses between phrases and sentences
