Hearing Aid Fitting
Your Hearing Aid Fitting
Your Audiologist will work closely with you on how to properly wear your devices, and guide you through extensive follow up care. It is also a good idea to bring a family member or close friend to your hearing aid fitting so they can help remember the important information that is given and be a support to you. In addition, both of you are able to provide valuable information about your lifestyle and hearing habits. By bringing someone with you, you improve your Audiologist’s chances of perfectly adjusting your hearing aids to your individual needs.
Follow up appointments
To adjust your hearing aids to your hearing and lifestyle as best as possible, your Audiologist will ask you to come back for follow up appointments to check on your progress. Extensive follow up, including computerized speech mapping, aided testing, and speech testing in noise ensures our patients receive the maximum benefit from their selected device(s). These appointments also give you an opportunity to ask your Audiologist any questions that may have arisen since your last visit. You can also let your Audiologist know in what ways your devices are helping and also whether you have been experiencing any unexpected situations, either with your hearing or your devices. This will help resolve any issues.
Your brain must adapt to new amplified sounds, which does not happen overnight. In fact, research shows that the main process can take 1-2 months. The key to successfully getting through the adaptation process is to wear the hearing aids as much as possible. If you only wear the hearing aids occasionally, you will NEVER get accustomed to the hearing aids and will not get much benefit from them.
Getting Used to Hearing Aids Takes Time
Wearing hearing aids for the first time can be an overwhelming experience. It’s completely normal to need a few weeks to get used to them. After your hearing aid fitting, you and your Audiologist will work together during your follow up appointments to adjust and fine tune your hearing aids to a point where you no longer have to think about them – they are simply part of your day. This time with your Audiologist is important for hearing aid success. We work with you during this time to educate you and adjust your hearing aids so you get the comfort and performance you deserve.
